Now it is time to review some tips for tasteful typography. You will use the THEMED SERIES image you took at Bannack Ghost Town for this activity. You will add tasteful typography to your photos to create a powerful visual message. This is a great skill to have for use with social media marketing. This activity will also prepare you for using typography with your images as you finish your photobook project. Appealing typeface choices can enhance beautiful photography, but a poor typeface can ruin even a stunning image. Half of the battle is learning which fonts are on most graphic designers’ “black list.”  Some of the most abhorred and overused (script and decorative) typefaces include: Papyrus, Comic Sans, Zapfino and Scriptina, but you will learn more to avoid, along with a list of simple, legible classics.

Part 1 Instructions

1. REVIEW: Please re-read and make sure you understand this document from Comm130: Principles of Typography.

2. FINE ART TEMPLATE: Use the Custom Images e-book and follow tutorial VI.7 Fine Art template. Using your themed image series from Bannack, create your own fine art template with appropriate typography and your scanned signature in the white space. Feel free to be creative! You could use a color other than white and change the size and shape of the “windows” but remember that odd numbers like 3, 5, and 7 are most appealing (unless you have a good design reason to have an even number.)

3. THEMED SERIES WITH TASTEFUL TYPOGRAPHY

1. Take your 10 themed image series taken at Bannack, but have not used. Add typography to at least 3 of these images. Your image used for the Fine Art Template can count toward the 10 images from the theme if desired.
2. Your first image will introduce the theme.  Insert a title and a subtitle.  Feel free to include body copy text below the subtitle, if desired.
3. Add a paragraph of type on at least one of the subsequent images.
4. Include type on at least 3 images. Your watermark is not considered to be added type for this activity.
5. Be sure you have a watermark on all images, except the fine art template, since that has your studio name and signature.
6. Export all images for this post at 1024px on the long side, and rename to include your name.

This is a time to let your imagination and creativity soar! Choose simple and beautiful typography that is complimentary to your images. Look at this blog post for inspiration by former Comm 300 student, Andrea Bradley. Keep in mind Andrea’s post does not adhere to the requirements for this activity. This is only for inspiration of how great simple type looks! Remember to use simple, contrasting typefaces and follow the tips from class and the Principles of Typography document.

4. BLOG POST: Create a new Typography blog post and insert the Part A: Fine Art template image. Then include your series of 10 images with 3+ images having typography, and make sure photos are clickable. Write a few paragraphs about your process. Be sure you list your title and body copy typefaces and their categories.

EXAMPLE:
Title:
Arial, Sans-Serif
Body: Times New Roman, Oldstyle

5. SOCIAL MEDIA:  Share at least one of your images in Instagram and one of these other social media platforms:
1. Facebook  – Instagram – Pinterest – Twitter – Tumblr
Always use the Hashtag: #comm300 and in INSTAGRAM…tag @visualcomm.photos on the image

Note: You can either share a link to your post, or share all images on that platform.

6. SUBMISSION:
1. Hit “open” and submit a WORKING HYPERLINK to your typography blog post and a screenshot of your post.
2. Provide the links or list of the two accounts where you shared, posted or tweeted your Tasteful Typography work.
