A Study in Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO:
Learning to educate yourself is a vital skill that will help you stay competitive in this ever-changing industry. Finding your own affordable resources to become a lifelong learner is a valuable, yet surprisingly underused skill. You will use SME skills to identify online examples of aperture, shutter speed and ISO to better understand exposure.

Equipment

• Computer with a good internet connection.
• Headphones to listen to videos.
• Adobe programs and DLSR or Mirrorless camera to follow along with videos.

 

Overview

  • PREPARE: Look for resources to learn photography concepts. 
  • PROVE: Write a blog post to prove what you have learned.
  • PONDER: Write a good question relating to these concepts.

Instructions

1. EXPLORE ONLINE RESOURCES:
Watch videos or look for resources that explain the photography concepts of aperture and shutter speed. You may use the resources listed below or find others.

2. CREATE A BLOG POST TO PROVE YOUR UNDERSTANDING

A. Find a good photographic example of each of the 5 concepts listed below using www.pexels.com and save them to your desktop (5 different pictures.) You can ONLY use pexels.com
1. Wide Aperture
2. Narrow Aperture
3. Fast Shutter Speed
4. Slow Shutter Speed
5. A photography or editing topic you are interested in (See 1. Explore, above, for ideas)

B. Follow these instructions to resize images in Photoshop so the short side is 1080 pixels. Then, include the 5 resized images in your post and TAG WHICH IMAGE REPRESENTS EACH PRINCIPLE
C. Write at least 400 words to demonstrate your understanding of each of the 5 concepts above. (At least 3-4 well written sentences for each concept)

3. WRITE A GOOD QUESTION:
While you learned about exposure  you undoubtedly had some questions. Write the most important question you had/have relating to these concepts and post it on our class facebook group. Search for a facebook post in our class facebook group titled “SME- Exposure questions” and add your question as a comment to that post. 

 

Submission

  1. Submit a working hyperlink to your blog post (not your main blog) by pasting the link to the WEB URL tab on the canvas submission.
  2. Add your exposure question as a comment on the Facebook Group post titled: SME Exposure Questions.
    To find the post… Go to Announcements at the top of the feed (or in left Menu) > SME Exposure Questions

Do not submit until everything is complete. Once you submit, be sure NOT to change anything on your post, until after it is graded. Follow the Submission Instruction

Rubric

NOTE: Meeting the minimum requirements is “average” and constitutes an 80% or B- grade, according to the University Grading Guide. To receive a higher grade, students should excel. However, quality and/or difficulty is more important than quantity.

√ SIZING: Photos sized to 1080 pixels on the short side. First part of jpeg filename is student’s name. Example: JakeSpencer-Tetons.jpg. Photos displayed at “Large” size in blog post, per instructions in Week 1 > Photo Blog Instructions. Photos are clickable.

√ PROCESS: Detailed paragraphs, at least 250 words total

√ INSTRUCTIONS: 4+ photographic examples and 50 words about each concept.

√ WRITING QUALITY:  Grammar – Spelling – Understanding of concepts – Length

√ SUBMISSION: Link submitted was a true hyperlink and linked directly to the completed blog post. Listed question on FB.

CAUTION: YOUR ASSIGNMENT IS NOT COMPLETE UNTIL YOU SUBMIT A LINK TO IT HERE. However, you are allowed a one-time extension, if you choose to use your mulligan. Please read about it in the syllabus. We check your blog post for completion right at the deadline, so please do not add things later. Everything needs to be complete when you post the link.
